You need: computer, modem (minimum 14.4, better 33.6), telephone line at home, contract with Attelkom.

Step 1. Contract
Go to Attelkom office with your passport. From this summer Attelkom is private company, so old contracts must be signed again (I stood in line 2 hours). They give you paper with username, password and telephone number for connection. The number I don't write here, Attelkom asked us not to put it on internet. Don't lose the paper!

Step 2. Install modem
Control Panel > Modems > Add. If Windows does not find it, choose "Standard 28800 bps Modem". Works also for 33.6.

Step 3. Dial-Up Networking
My Computer > Dial-Up Networking > Make New Connection. Name: Attelkom. Enter the telephone number from your paper. If you don't have Dial-Up Networking icon, you must install it from Windows CD (Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup > Communications).

Step 4. Settings (important!!)
Right click on Attelkom icon > Properties > Server Types:

• Type of Dial-Up Server: PPP
• Log on to network: NO (remove the tick)
• Protocols: only TCP/IP. Remove NetBEUI and IPX/SPX, they make connection slow.
• TCP/IP Settings: server assigned IP address, server assigned name server addresses.

Step 5. Connect!
Double click, write username and password, press Connect. You will hear: piiiiiiii - krrrrrrrr - dzzzzzzz - shhhhhhhh. This is normal. When the sound stops and you see small computers near the clock - you are in internet! Open Internet Explorer or Netscape.

PROBLEMS:

Error 691	Wrong username or password. Check Caps Lock. Check Russian keyboard is not on!
Error 678 / line is busy	All Attelkom lines are busy. In evening 19:00-23:00 it is almost impossible. Try after 23:00 (also night tariff is cheaper).
No dial tone	Somebody is speaking on telephone. Or telephone line is broken again in your district.
Connection suddenly dies	Your mother picked up the telephone in kitchen. Explain her. (It does not help, but explain.)
Very slow	Normal. Switch off pictures in browser (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced). Pages will be fast but ugly.
